Ask Colin

Do you select a list of stocks once a year and populate your portfolio from this list?

No, I am constantly looking at stocks. Every time I read a newspaper or magazine, I will look at the charts. Then once a week I run the 52 week new high scan. I pick up a lot of ideas from this. I also run scans on PE ratio from time to time and also a combined scan of the two previous scans which produces a short list that is sometimes interesting, but often not because the stocks are thinly traded or are trusts etc. Which scan I run at any point is partly driven by the market at the time. So if I am looking

especially for value stocks, I will use the PE scan. If I am also looking for growth stocks I will use the new highs scan.
