At the top of Insight Trader charts I see things like W@W - what does this mean?

The letters used here will be either

D, which means Daily

W, which means Weekly or

M, which means Monthly.

The letter before the @ sign refers to the display. So,

D@ means that you are looking at daily bars, candlesticks etc.

W@ means you are looking at weekly bars, candlesticks etc.

M@ means you are looking at monthly bars, candlesticks etc.

To change the display you may use the keys D, W or M. You may also use the floating toolbar.

The letter after the @ sign is the tricky bit. This refers to the compression of the data file.

Basic data files will be daily compression (@D). That means that for a stock you will have the open, high, low, close and volume for that stock for every day it trade

However, Insight Trader allows you to compress the data file to weekly or monthly.

@W means that you have compressed the file in memory (not on the hard drive) so that it now has only one set of data for the week - Monday's open, the highest high for Monday through Friday, the lowest low Monday through Friday, Friday's close and the total volume for Monday through Friday.

@M means that you have further compressed the file in memory (not on the hard drive) so that it now has only one set of data for the month - the open for the first trading day in the month, the highest high for the month, the lowest low for the month, the close for the last trading day of the month and the total volume for the month.

The implications for @W and @M are that any indicator is now calculated from the weekly or monthly data (usually the close), not the daily data. So, if you want a daily MACD, you need @D. If you want a weekly MACD, you need @W. If you want a monthly MACD, you need @M.

You switch from @D to @W with Shift+W and to @M with Shift+M. You may also use the floating toolbar.
