Ask Colin

How much time each week do you spend  on your investing?

It varies, but on a typical weekday I probably spend 8 to 9 hours. Over the weekend another 5-6 hours.

That said, I do take time out for the rest of my life – it is one of the joys of being “retired” or self-employed”, call it what you will. This is usually part days, evenings, odd whole days and holidays, but can be several weeks at a stretch when I travel.

This may sound a lot of time, but it is quite comparable to my employed working life. For me, investing is a business and to carry it out successfully requires ongoing time and effort.

The alternative to doing it properly yourself is to invest through conservatie, passive closed end funds (LICs in Australia) or index funds, both of which have low fee structures.
