Ask Colin

I often do not buy a stock because of the lack of depth. Am I focussing too much on market depth?

Yes, I suspect that you may be putting too much emphasis on market depth.

What is shown on the market depth screens is not complete. The size of some orders is not disclosed. I have also found that a lot of orders are not on the system. Instead, operators and traders will be watching and acting on bids and offers as they appear.

I have lost count of the number of times I have put on a bid for say 10,000 shares at $1.02 when there was only 3,000 disclosed at $1.02 and had them all done almost immediately
