When does a shareholder become entitled to a dividend?

A buyer loses entitlement to a dividend on the ex date. Ex means "without" in Latin. The ex date is the first day the shares trade without the dividend attached to them. If you sell before this date, you lose entitlement to the dividend. Once the dividend has been declared, you can look up the ex date on the ASX web site www.asx.com.au
