What is the original source for the Dogs of the Dow investment method?

As far as I can see, the Dogs of the Dow idea came from James O'Shaughnessy. It seems that it started with an article he wrote in Barrons in 1992, featuring its returns over 63 years and that it is still tracked in regular articles in Barrons.

The most accessible source is O'Shaughnessy's book How to Retire Rich, which includes the statistical tables on the Dogs of the Dow performance.
