I use fundamental information from the Australian Financial Review and Aspect Financial through Comsec, but there are differences. Which is most reliable?

There are several possible reasons for the differences:

1. If the company has announced new data recently, one may have updated it and the other not. I know that the AFR can take a week or more to catch up in busy periods. I am not sure how up to date Aspect runs.

2. There may be some differences in methodology. For example, I think they use different methods for the Debt to Equity ratio, but there may be other adjustments either or both make to the published data from the company.

My approach is to use these sources as a first reference, but always verify the data from the company's website (addresses are on www.asx.com.au) if the annual report is there or from the company's announcement (also from www.asx.com.au). Failing that, I call the company and get the latest annual report or interim/preliminary report.
